If I’m an advocate for anything it’s to move. Go as far as you can.. as much as you can. Walk in someone else’s shoes.. eat their food.. drink their wine.

It’s a plus for everybody. - Anthony Bourdain

3 ways to avoid passport delays

3 ways to avoid passport delays

In January, I took advantage of an invitation from the Department of State to complete my passport renewal online. It's a new process being trialed that's only supposed to take 2 weeks to renew. I could keep my passport, upload a digital photo, pay my fee and wallah… I would have my new passport in my hand.

Yeah well.. it hasn't worked out to be that easy.

In fact, I am currently at week 10 of what should have been no more than a 3 week process. Well, because I am a great and caring travel agent( lol!), I'm going to share my experience and what I've learned from the process.

You may need way more than 6-11 weeks.. even for expedited passports

Please understand that the processing time starts when the agency opens your file and begins to process your application: not when you applied. It may take months for you to receive an approved passport so it's best to apply early! Oh and avoid applying during these times because the process may take even longer.

  • Spring break demand is high during April, May and June

  • Summer vacations: May, June, July,

  • Winter holiday season: November and December

I would begin the process as early as possible. Keep in mind that when your application process starts, your old passport will be invalidated so you won't be able to travel with it. If you have back to back trips requiring the use of your passport, correct timing will be essential for you successfully traveling.

The picture matters… a lot!

It took me 4 days to take a picture the online submission system would approve. 2 pictures and $40 later, I finally got it right…maybe lol!

Besides the rules listed on the Department of State's website, here are a few more tips you may want to implement when prepping for your photo.

  • Skip wearing any type of headwear. Hats, headbands, scarves, etc…wear nothing on your head.. nada

  • Filters are an easy way to correct any flaws in your pics. Unfortunately you won't be able to use them! Apply makeup with a light hand avoiding over exaggerated features. Also try wearing a great concealer or apply a very natural look. Too much makeup will also cause your photo to be rejected.

  • The background used for photos will be an off white wall or drop down cloth. Wearing jewel tones and/or deep, rich colors will always look good in front of the camera.

Delayed doesn't mean denied

So the unthinkable happens. Despite all of my advice and your best intentions, your passport processing and delivery has been delayed. Welp… shit happens. If you have to take further steps to get your passport, keep a couple things in mind…

The Passport Agency doesn't accept walk ins. You will have to talk to a Department of State representative on the phone first. If you qualify for an expedited passport through your local Passport Agency, the Department of State will request an appointment on your behalf. Get your coffee and be prepared to wait on the phone unless

  • You call Tuesday or Wednesday avoiding Mondays and Fridays( peak days). The business hours are Mondays through Fridays 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. EST.

  • Call at 0759 so you'll be among the first to talk to a representative. Seriously. Calling anytime after 0900 will guarantee at least a 2 hour hold time. Trust me on this.

I hope these tips help you avoid the pitfalls of the passport renewal process. Leave a comment or shoot me an email if you need additional help or to share your experience. Happy travels!
